Overexposed Blossoms

Overexposed Blossoms
Title: Overexposed blossoms by Me

I’ve been kind of posting things out of order lately; mostly because I have a backlog of approximately three million flower photos I’ve snapped in the last month, and I get bored if I think my Flickr stream is getting too monotonous. So I’ve been switching it up and posting things out of chronological order.

Anyway – this photo is mostly just what the title implies; a macro shot of cherry blossoms, overexposed by 2 stops.

My Ball!

My ball

The hardest part of taking a picture of a puppy isn’t the photography – it’s getting him to face the camera, pose, and not lick the lens or bite the camera. (This was shot with my macro lens actually, so at least I could keep some distance between the camera and his tongue).

Anyway, his name is Opus and he belongs to my parents. Cute ain’t he?

Beautiful Day

Beautiful Day
Title: Beautiful Day by Me

Flowers are arguably the most cliche subject in all of photography. Yet every time we reach the end of a dreary winter and the flowers start to bloom, I’m out there with my camera taking some of the most unoriginal shots in my portfolio, and subjecting everyone who follows me to dozens standard shots of any kind of flower I happen to come across. And I love every bit of it.

This particular one is a pretty basic macro shot, shot in direct sunlight with just a touch of vignetting added in Lightroom.

Eureka!

Eureka!

Macro lens, very fast shutter and small aperture. The light bulb is so bright compared to the background that the latter appears black.

One thing is not like the others

One thing is not like the others

Nine frame HDR, tonemapped with Photomatix, and shot with a tripod and macro lens, pointed downward. I used a small aperture to keep it as sharp as possible (difficult, because coins are surprisingly un-sharp objects, due to weathering).

The reason for the HDR is because I quickly discovered the coins, being metal, are very reflective and consequently very high contrast. Blown highlights abound otherwise.

The idea came to me when I noticed the twenty pence piece in my pile of coins; I think that makes the image interesting and sets it apart at least a little bit from countless similar images that have been taken.

Man Made

Man Made

Another shot from NYC – there are no less than four buildings in this shot.

I keep meaning to take more photos in the heart of the city – for some reason, I never seem to when I’m there. So that’s on my to do list now that the weather’s warm again.

Spring!

Spring Has Arrived
Title: Spring has Arrived

I shot this as I walked out of my office building yesterday. It wasn’t there when I walked in in the morning. Which in my mind is pretty amazing, and one reason that I stand in humbling awe of nature. More importantly though, it means that Spring has officially, definitively, inarguably arrived – and for me it couldn’t have come soon enough.

I shot it with a macro lens, holding the branch steady with my other hand as the breeze was shaking it a bit too much.

Last photo of the winter

End of Winter
Title: End of Winter by Me.

I’m probably jinxing myself by saying so, but I believe this will be the last photo with any snow in it that I’ll be sharing from this winter.

Good riddance.

So I didn’t post anything over the weekend

300,000,000 meters a second
Title: 3,000,000 Meters a Second by me.

Usually if I know I won’t be around, I’ll write a couple of entries and post date them, so as not to break my post-a-day string, but this weekend kind of caught me by surprise with regards to how busy I was. I thought about cheating and putting up some backdated posts today, but I thought better of it. As I see it, I had a 100+ post unbroken string, which is pretty good. I’m allowed to miss a day now and then. And most importantly, no one complained.

This is a five second exposure, standing in a store parking lot on the side of a highway, with a view of New York City in the distance. It was windy as heck though, so I don’t think the result is as sharp as it ought to be; pretty much everything was moving, and even the camera might have jiggled a little with the shutter open. I keep meaning to go back and essentially retake this, but I haven’t gotten around to it as of yet.

Let it Snow!
Let it snow! by me.

Just as the season starts to finally transition to springtime, I hit a backlog of snow and winter photos to upload…

This is straight out of the camera, basically just a snapshot of a snow covered evergreen.
